More about PETER HOVIOUS: Census records suggest Peter grew up in Green Co., KY, with his mother and her second husband Benjamin Metcalf. By 1840 he was living in Marion County. More from notes in a scrapbook owned by Kathryn Steadham, written by her sister Adele Doty; (both granddaughters of Peter Hovious.) "Emma Madora Hovious was born March 26, 1870 in Washington, Indiana, on the White River where they lived on a farm. Emma, her sister Betty, and their parents, Peter and Mary Hovious moved to Texas November 17, 1875. They traveled by train all the way from Washington, Indiana to Sherman, Texas, where the train tracks ended. The coaches were heated with pot-bellied stoves. When they got to Sherman, Texas, they (Peter and Mary Hovious) bought a team and wagon, went on to Brownwood, Texas, camped on the Pecan Bayou, where they saw their first pecans growing, then moved to May, Texas. Mary Hovious came to Texas for her health. In Indiana, she had pneumonia and it left her with "Galloping Consumption" (tuberculosis). She died in 1878. Peter Hovious then married Sariah English, which was an unhappy marriage for both Grandfather and (Emma). Emma said Grandfather was a kindly man and no one ever quarreled in his presence."
