Murrie died in 1988. The October 27, 1988, Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) carried this obituary:

"MURRIE KNIFLEY, FORMER ADAIR OFFICIAL, DIES
COLUMBIA
-- Former Adair County official Murrie Knifley died Tuesday at Jane Todd Crawford Memorial Hospital. Knifley, of Fairground Street, was 77. Knifley was Columbia's police chief from about 1954 to 1974. He was city judge from about 1974 to 1978 and District 2 magistrate after he was judge. He was a deacon at Columbia Christian Church. Knifley was born at Knifley in Adair County. Surviving are his wife, Opal Hovious Knifley; two sons, and one daughter."
