More about Clint Hovious:
What little is known about Clint Hovious comes from newspaper accounts and Clint's prison record. According to that record, Clint was a Teamster by trade who left home when he was 10 years old. He was a chain-smoker with a 3rd-grade education who'd been arrested once before in 1907, for "disorderly conduct", although those charges were dismissed. He was 5 feet 6 7/8 inches tall and weighed 136 pounds. In answering the prison questionnaire Clint displayed little knowledge of his father, somewhat more of his mother who was still alive at the time.
In September 1912, the Fort Wayne Sentinel carried the following news item:
SHOOTING AT BLOOMINGTON
Frank Todd May Die From Attack by Clinton Hovious
Bloomington, Ind.. Sept 27 --- Frank Todd, 40, former chief of the local fire department, was shot and probably fatally wounded by Clinton Hovious, 35, who received several knife wounds when the two men quarreled and fought last night at the home of the former.
Hovious, who surrendered to the officers, admits the shooting. ... Todd recently married the divorced wife of Hovious and since that time it is said that the two men have quarreled frequently. The woman was present at last night's trouble, but the officers were unable to obtain a statement from her concerning the difficulties which led up to the fight.

Several months went by, during which newspaper reports indicate Clint had to be rushed to the hospital and treated for appendicitis. Then:
FRANK TODD'S SUFFERING
IS RELIEVED BY DEATH
Victim of Bullet from Hovious
Revolver Died Sunday
After lingering since September 23rd with a bullet wound imbedded in
his right hip, Frank Todd, former chief of the Bloomington police
department, was relieved by death at 4:30 Sunday afternoon. He died
at his home on east Twelfth street. Clinton Hovious, who shot Todd.
and who was out of Jail on bond, was rearrested and will be held on
a first degree murder charge.
Hovious, who shot Todd during the visit of the 23rd United States
Infantry to Bloomington in September, and who was released on bond,
was arrested at 9:30 last night and is again in Jail. He has retained
Atty. R. H. East to defend him. Hovious was acting as a special
policeman while the soldiers were here. On the night of the tragedy, he
went to the home of Todd and after a few words had passed, the two
men began a scuffle. Hovious drew his gun and shot Todd and the
latter called to he wife to get a police officer. Todd was removed to
the hospital in an ambulance and Hovious was placed in Jail.

Clint went on trial before Judge James B. Wilson in March 1913. He pled Not Guilty to one charge of manslaughter. He received a sentence of 2 to 21 years. He entered the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City on 16 April 1913 and was eventually assigned to a prison farm. After serving the minimum sentence he was paroled on 1 May 1915 and discharged from parole on 28 April 1916.
The 1930 Census shows that he was employed as the County Humane Officer in Muncie, IN. Interestingly enough, he is shown with a wife named Lillie. It is not yet known if she is the same Lillie who was his second wife, the one the shooting was over. Research Continues.
